California Recall Recap......


 The Answer: Gavin Newsom was not recalled.

The Question: What happened?

A few things are clear. First, Newsom has done a poor job as Governor. He operates like this position of California Governor is really just a temporary job waiting for the next step in his political career. He has not solved the California Wildfire crisis, or the Water crisis, or the Homeless crisis, or managed the Covid response well. Newsom's reactionary approach is, to have a meeting and form a committee to study the problem. Then hold a news conference to claim action is being taken. Meanwhile, wildfires burn and water is short. The Homeless flood the streets and California Lockdown almost crushed the economy. The Recall was justified.

Second. Once the recall was approved the supporters stopped selling the Newsom Failure message. They assumed everyone knew Newsom was a failure and switched to supporting a candidate of their choice. This was the major mistake.

Team Newsom converted the performance oriented recall to a battle between ideologies. Newsom simply could not defend his record so he defended California against Trump and Trump supporters. In doing this, Newsom gained support among unhappy democrats and independents. They thought: "Yes, Newsom has done a bad job but the alternative is worse."

40 candidates ran to succeed Newsom but the biggest target was Larry Elder. He was a Trump supporter who had made stupid comments and supported dumb ideas. Elder knew nothing about government or campaigning and the results show it.

What did we learn? Republicans or "QAnon Party" members have shot themselves in the foot with crazy behavior and dumb ideas. The result is they are unelectable. No Trump supporter can get elected to any real political position in California or perhaps America. Smart Real Conservatives have abandon the QP [QAnon Party] and there simply are not enough Bible Trumpers, Nazis, and Conspiracy Theorist out there to elect candidates. Mainstream independents have moved away and there is no hope of support among Democrats.

The Recall Election confirmed that Trumpism can not be elected. Like McCarthyism before it, it is too crazy and too far a reach for most American voters. The Republican Party is dead and the new 2021 Political landscape is filled with:

  • Corporate Democrats [Clinton, Obama, Biden, faction] 25%
  • Social Democrats [Bernie, AOC faction] 15%
  • Independents [people who really don't care]  30%
  • Real Conservatives [George Will, Goldwater faction]  5%
  • QAnon Bible Trumpers [Nazi, Christian Jihad faction] 25%

The only good news in all this is that Corporate Democrats seem to be in charge of US Politics and that, much like the Recall, is better than the alternatives.

 I was a poor reader. In third grade Ms Cicchetto told my parents that my reading had gotten worse over the summer and I was reading at the second grade level. I tried to read more, but I just didn't care about reading. TV was much more interesting. Then Mom signed me up for the Library Reading Club. If you read ten books...any books...you got an award. So we went to the Library every Friday afternoon. I picked books that looked good. And I read Ten Books. The Library lady came to our school and to Ms. Cicchetto's surprise, I was awarded a Reading Club Certificate. This began my interest is reading. By 1960, we were living in Germany and I was reading paperback books when I found Dr No. It was a spy book about a British secret agent named James Bond. The author was Ian Fleming. William May....my Dad the Veteran

 My father, like many others from the depression, grew up poor. My Grandfather, Thomas May, had died when dad was young. Dad grew up with his three other brothers and they worked to earn money to support their Mom and the family. During Prohibition, Dad's brothers who had worked at a local Brewery, were fired due to the closure of the Brewery. They earned money by driving trucks of illegal alcohol to secret bars in East Saint Louis. Dad was young and his job was to "ride shotgun." He would sit in the truck with one of his brothers and hold the shotgun just in case they were stopped. Poverty led to my father having a limited education. Worse, helping his brothers smuggle alcohol led to limited job skills. Then in 1942, America went to War. As Dad told me, "I didn't know how to do very much.
